Celebrating Lufkin’s Thundering 13 and Remembering the 1959 World Series Champions

This week, as all of Angelina County and East Texas support Lufkin's Southwest Regional Champions in their bid to win the Little League World Series, The History Center is remembering another team of local World Series Champs. Lufkin's PONY Grad team won the world series in August 1959 during a tournament in Springfield, IL. First baseman Bobby Ramsey received support from teachers, friends, company executives, and other Diboll citizens by way of letters and telegrams. The boys from Angelina County were ultimately victorious and brought the title home to Lufkin. In 2012, Lufkin native Randy Odom discovered a recording of his uncle, Murphy Martin (who would later become a national news anchor and voice of the Dallas Cowboys) announcing the first few innings of one of the games, a 2-1 Lufkin victory over California Riverside on August 28. Click here to listen to that recording.

Good Luck to the Thundering 13! The History Center is cheering for you!
