Happy Thanksgiving from The History Center! We will be closed on Thursday November 26 and Friday November 27 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. Regular hours resume on Saturday, November 28, when we will be open 9:00 to 1:00.
As part of our mission to collect, preserve, and make available the history of our area, we have just posted a new collection that reminds us of Thanksgivings past. Sergeant James (Steve) Waley served in the United States Army during World War II, spending the Thanksgiving of 1944 in France. Click here to see the menu for the "B" battery 411th AAA Gun Battalion's Thanksgiving dinner. The men could look forward to a traditional meal, and the menu includes a Thanksgiving prayer from their chaplain and messages from their commanding officers. The closing sentiment from 1st Lt. Waterman was surely shared by all servicemen that year, "May the next Thanksgiving find us home."
