Bernice Arnold Trammell was born January 9, 1942, to James Mumford Arnold and Bertha Mae Anthony in Angelina County. She attended Diboll High School, becoming band sweetheart and graduating in 1959. She later went on to marry David J. Trammell on November 10, 1979.
