The Burke Center, now known simply as Burke, was founded in 1974 as the Deep East Texas Mental Health and Mental Retardation Services (DETRMHMRS). DETRMHMRS began as a joint university-community project led Stephen F. Austin State University, in close partnership with The Hogg Foundation for Mental Health, to help improve mental health services in Nacogdoches and Shelby Counties. The project expanded to cover all thirteen counties in Deep East Texas. This collection contains annual reports, biographical information, correspondence, grants, and records.
