William Dewey “Billy” Griggs was born on December 13, 1919, in Crocket, Texas, to Maude Ellen (Smith) and Isaac Benjamin Griggs. On September 26, 1940, he enlisted in the army. During World War II, he rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant within the 478th Ordinance Evacuation Company. Billy Griggs followed the allied armies during their stay in England, the invasion of Normandy, the liberation of France, and the Western Allied invasion of Germany. His unit also came into frequent contact with Quartermaster units following in the wake of allied armies.
