On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger issued General Order Number 3 in Galveston, Texas, which began "The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free." African Americans in Diboll have joined with communities all over Texas in celebrating and commemorating this day with barbeques, services, picnics, and other gatherings. Organized by community members, this important day has become a celebration of freedom and African American culture.

The History Center joins our community in commemorating this historic and important day. Please enjoy these few example photos of community celebrations through the years and find more on our website by searching "Juneteenth" in the search box.
