Before becoming a nationally known reporter and the voice of the Dallas Cowboys, Murphy Martin worked in Angelina County broadcasting. One of his jobs, for which he was locally beloved, was to call local sporting events, especially Lufkin Panther football games and important baseball games. In August 1959, the Lufkin PONY Grad team travelled to Springfield, Illinois, for the World Series tournament. They won this game 2-1 against the team from Riverside, California, eventually winning the tournament to bring the World Series title home to East Texas. Diboll's Bobby Ramsey was a member of the team and received good luck messages from most of the town's citizens.
