The J. C. Brashears Family Collection consists of correspondence (1888-1945), poll lists and tally lists for Burke, TX Precinct No. 3 Angelina County (1917-1926), state and county tax receipts (1883-1928, 1946), poll tax receipts (1904-1928), school tax receipts (1920-1930), newspapers and clippings (1891-1975), bank receipts (1896-1910), and undated photographs, legal documents, envelopes, notepad, and a manuscript. John Clisby Brashears was born in Texas in 1859, the son of J. M. and Nancy Clementine Brashears and made his living as a farmer and schoolteacher in Burke, Texas. He also worked at a lumber yard likely in Keltys, Texas, now a part of Lufkin, built by Charles Louis Kelty. Brashears was additionally the presiding officer or judge of Angelina County’s Precinct 3 in Burke during the late 1910s and into the 1920s. After a courtship in the late 1880s he married Mollie Clayton of Homer on January 27, 1889. Mollie died in childbirth soon after, and John married her cousin, Rosie McClendon (1872-1960) four years later.
